Liesfeld Podium FinishOn August 17, Chris Liesfeld, driver of the Hobart Service/Hertz Equipment Rentals/Fields Racing #96 Camaro, had his best finish in the Trans-Am Series, with a third place finish in TA2 at Road America.

This was the very first time Fields Racing competed at Road America. “This is a great facility and fun track to drive. It was a challenge to get to know this track, but I find it could become one of my favorites,” said the rookie TA2 driver.

Liesfeld’s first laps of this historic track were during the track promoter day on August 15. This early practice turned out to be more important than he realized at the time, since the next day the Trans-Am Series practice was rained out. According to Liesfeld , “The car came out of the trailer better than it ever has coming into a race. We made a lot of changes to the suspension to free up the car, and I couldn’t believe that the car felt as good as it did.”

Though the rain had stopped just before qualifying, the track was still too wet for the #96 Camaro to go out. Because of the wet conditions, Trans-Am Series officials decided to start the race by points. This gave Liesfield a 20th place starting position overall, with an eighth place position in the TA2 field. This wasn’t ideal, but it was time to race.

In the early morning hours of August 17 at Elkhart Lake, Liesfied started the first few laps of the race, just feeling the car out. “The car sat in the trailer all day yesterday,’’ noted the TA2 driver. “We knew the car was ready, but we had no idea how the car would handle with a new set of tires on this particular suspension set up.” The car proved to be just fine with lap times, just below the lead cars in TA2.

After some hard racing and a few cautions, the #96 Camaro jumped into fifth place. With less than 10 laps until the finish, and the intensity picking up, the third and fourth place TA2 cars got together in the last turn. Liesfeld narrowly passed the two spinning cars and was able to take third place. Avoiding mistakes and holding that position, he would go on to finish third in TA2, 12th place overall. Afterward Liesfeld said, “The car just kept getting better as the race progressed. Our fastest lap times were towards the end of the race. Everything was dialed in.”

Chris Liesfeld and the Hobart Service/Hertz Equipment Rentals/Fields Racing #96 Camaro are planning to attend the next Trans-Am Series race at Brainerd International Raceway, August 31-September 2. This was a great weekend for the entire crew of Fields Racing, and according to Chris, “I can’t help but be pleased with my team and car after this race. We’ve been working hard and now have built some momentum for the upcoming event, which is crucial since Brainerd is a doubleheader weekend.”
